andrea j lee | welcome

Andrea is a Taiwanese-Canadian artist living in Ontario.

Analog collage forms the heart of her practice, but she also finds printmaking, gouache, and

pen and ink to be excellent travel companions.

In her art, she is fuelled by the desire to communicate things that words alone cannot.

Andrea studied woodblock printing at the Mokuhanga School in Nagano, Japan, learning from Terry McKenna in the lineage of Masahiko Tokumitsu.

Her first juried exhibit was at the Colbourne Street Gallery and she participated in the Politics In Collage Residency held in 2025 by The Kolaj Institute.

Andrea is indebted to the generous and talented art teachers Kat HoneyLindsay ErdmanSharlena Wood along with fellow coach and mentor Sandy McMullen, each of whom played an important role in Andrea's leap to visual artist.

Her work is in private collections in Canada, Taiwan, Japan and the United States.

"Harbinger of Peas"

11" X 14" Original

This work is sometimes mistaken for a painting, which it is not. The pale background is a wash using gouache paint, and the dark sky was done using charcoal powder.

All other components are hand-cut collage. The dove carrying a single pea pod was first printed using traditional woodblock printing technique.

Museum grade giclée art prints - framed and unframed in a range of sizes -

will be available here soon.

How can art contribute to a better world?

What can art convey that words can't? What can art and words transmit together?

These are some of the questions Andrea is asking in her art practice at the moment.

"Where Are You in the Sheepscape?"

5" x 7" original collage using found materials and clipart.

"Boundaries"

8" x 10" original collage using found materials.

In addition to prints, I am working on some creative offerings:

downloadables, chapbooks and picture books for adults.

...as well as, bit by bit, an exhibit titled "Now Hear This!" about the much-overlooked act of listening.

"Searching for the Truth in a Confusing Environment"

10" x 14" original collage using found materials and clipart.

Artist's description:

The above work was created in a residency focused on illustrating the Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide by Martin Mycielski.

The Sufi fable of blind men touching an elephant, each describing one part as if it were the whole, was my starting point. The frames denote limited points of view, the scattered red herrings distractions, and the woman stands frozen by her search for the heart of the matter. Red and blue add a layer of meaning for U.S. viewers for whom the colours convey political affiliation.

This is an analog collage made from found materials, public domain photographs, clipart and hand made pieces including a tiny one-inch square mono-print. The finished work has been minimally cleaned up in Pixelmator Pro.
